TYPE 2: Journal 6

Different views on “What single example of design inspires you most?” and “What problem should design solve next?”

Paula Scher:
She states that there is no single example of design and design does not go around solving problems. She said that problems come around and people find ways to do things better. Paula also made it a point and said that there is no specific design that we should tackle and that sometimes design is not even the answer.

Joe Duffy:
He started out by saying that there is not one man-made example of design that has inspired him. He mentioned that inspiration comes from so many different choices. Design is mainly focused nature and nature is what has inspired the work that we have done over the past twenty five years. He stated that nature is the inspiration and as a designer you have the impact on the natural environment.

Sean Adams:
What is inspiring to him is not just a piece of paper but is the Declaration of Independence. If you can design something for the government that everyone can can understand, it is pretty amazing. It is not the famous designers that inspire him but Thomas Jefferson... go figure. The next problem that he thinks designers need to solve is saying that there is a problem with designers. By saying this it makes designers feel inadequate and that they should be working for green-peace otherwise they are considered to be failing. It is like a chain effect. Everything that we do is a chain reaction: If a designer does a good job for the client than that client's business stays in good shape, therefore the client gets paid and can then pay for a house and pay for his child's braces. The only problem to solve is the next challenge that you get.

Brian Deputy:
His inspiration is the Eames Lounge Chair. He said that it is innovative, light weight aluminum and is the perfect blending of materials that work harmoniously. The chair communicated luxury and utilitarianism at the same time. There is not environment/ setting that it does not enhance and looks and feels better the more you use it/ longer you have it. It is like a well worn baseball mitt. The problem that designers should solve next: Well, Brian thinks that design does not solve problems, people do and ideas do. Design puts forms to ideas and communicates. It is up to the designer to make it work and if the design is successful then it solves a problem.

Eric Ryan:
His inspiration is his camera. He does not see the camera as an object but what it allows him to do. He looks around the world to find design and photographs what inspires him, whether it is a book, sign in the bathroom or person. The camera brings discipline and allows him to focus to find the inspiration. The problem that needs to be solved next, according to Eric, is the grass roof. He took this question literally and said that it will place people back into nature and make the world a more beautiful place and will reduce the energy cost. Designers need to figure out how to make in mainstream so that it can be successfully done.

After watching these videos I can now easily answer the questions: “What single example of design inspires you most?” and “What problem should design solve next?” I do not think that there is an specific example of design that inspires me the most. I feel that I can relate to Paula Scher when she says that there is no single example of design that is inspiring. Design does not go around and solve problems. Problems occur and people find ways to do things better. There is no specific way that a design should be tackled. As for what problem should design solve next, well I can definitely agree with Sean Adams when he stated that saying that there are problems for designers to fix is what makes designers feel inadequate. It makes them feel that if they should be working on a green-peace otherwise they are failing. The problems that design should solve next are just the on going challenges.
